“The Unknown War” is a landmark 1978 documentary born of a unique collaboration between the Soviet Union and the United States. It is based on more than a million meters of rare frontline footage shot by Soviet cameramen—material much of which had long remained unseen by the general public.
The film impresses not only with the power of its historical images but also with the depth of international cooperation: narration is by American actor Burt Lancaster, who later called the project “the most incredible film ever made.” The screenplay involved noted Russia expert Harrison E. Salisbury, formerly a war correspondent in Moscow. Artistic supervision was provided by American producer Isaac Kleinerman, while Soviet documentary master Roman Karmenand a large team tirelessly combed wartime archives.
The Battle of Stalingrad lasted 200 days and nights in the city on the Volga. More than two million soldiers took part in this massive clash. The plan devised by Zhukov and Vasilevsky, with the participation of Artillery Marshal Voronov, was codenamed Operation Uranus. In secrecy, the counteroffensive was prepared: ten armies—over one million troops, 1,500 tanks, and 15,000 artillery pieces—engaged five German armies and their allies and encircled them. The Battle of Stalingrad is regarded as the turning point of the war, marking the beginning of Nazi Germany’s defeat.
