Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mikhail Bulgakov’s satirical novella “Heart of a Dog” with a spectacular stage production inspired by this timeless work. The performance was created by the team behind the acclaimed production “The Master and Margarita” (Bulgakov Theatre / Poltava), which successfully toured cities across Germany. This new staging offers a unique interpretation of the literary classic.
“Heart of a Dog” occupies a special place in Russian literature. Written in 1925, the novella remained unavailable to the wider public for more than 60 years and circulated only in samizdat. The famous film adaptation starring Yevgeny Yevstigneyev caused a huge cultural response and renewed interest in the story among readers and theatre directors alike, leading to numerous stage adaptations. The production presented here is widely considered one of the finest interpretations.
At the center of the plot is the daring scientific experiment of Professor Philip Philippovich Preobrazhensky. After a complex operation involving a pituitary gland transplant, a stray dog named Sharik is transformed into a human being. The sensational discovery brings the professor worldwide fame. However, the initial excitement soon turns into concern: Sharik’s transformation into the citizen Polygraph Polygraphovich Sharikov raises doubts about the possibility of creating a “highly developed human personality.”
The performance conveys Bulgakov’s sharp satire with remarkable precision and elegance. Audiences will be immersed in a world filled with humor, irony, and sharp social commentary.
