Demolition of the Wittwer-Haus planned in central Stuttgart

Plans to demolish the Wittwer-Haus in Stuttgart have triggered public discussion. The building is located on Königstraße near Schlossplatz and has long been part of the city’s central urban landscape. For decades it housed a well-known bookstore that attracted many visitors.

For many residents, the building represents a familiar landmark of Stuttgart’s city center. As a result, the announcement of its planned demolition has generated emotional reactions among parts of the public.

According to the property owner, the building has been in use for nearly sixty years. Technical assessments identified a number of structural deficiencies, leading to the decision to gradually end its use and prepare for demolition.

Current tenants are expected to leave the building by the end of 2027. After that, demolition work is planned to begin. Some underground levels and parts of the ground floor may remain.

The architectural design of the future building on the site has not yet been determined. The concept is expected to be selected through an architectural competition.

For many residents, the demolition marks an important moment in the ongoing transformation of Stuttgart’s city center.
