Happy Catholic Easter!
For many centuries, more than 2.66 billion Christians around the world have celebrated Easter, or the Bright Resurrection of Christ, in spring. This is the main holiday for believing Christians, symbolizing the resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Messiah — the Redeemer from sins and the Savior of humanity. And this is rightly so. Because in Christianity the very idea of Resurrection occupies a central place. It symbolizes the transition from death to new life, from worldly existence to spiritual greatness.
In 2026, Catholics and Protestants following the Gregorian calendar will celebrate Easter on April 5. On the same day, many Armenian believers — Christians of the Armenian Apostolic Church — celebrate the feast of “Surb Zatik” (“deliverance from sins and return to God”). Orthodox Christians, following the Julian calendar, will celebrate Easter on April 12.
Until 1582, the dates of Catholic and Orthodox Easter coincided. However, after the adoption of the Gregorian calendar by the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. This led to differences in the dates of celebration, which can vary from one to five weeks, although coincidences remain possible. As it happened, for example, in 2025, when Catholic and Orthodox Easter were celebrated on the same day — April 20.
Despite the diversity and variations of religious traditions, calendars, established canons and rituals, for the overwhelming majority of believing Christians Easter is an event symbolizing the strengthening of spiritual values, the aspiration to goodness and the genuine, higher meaning in helping others. For many others, it is simply a joyful spring holiday among family, relatives and close friends, filled with a bright atmosphere and heartfelt communication.
